Judge me later, but I have a more important lesson coming after you laugh at me…

It took me a decade to get over my fear of needles and finally get the tattoo that I’d designed in my head about two decades earlier.  And, ironically, when the tattoo needle was first an inch from my skin – just before a drop of ink was on my skin – I didn’t panic about the metallic jab of death because I knew I wanted the tribute on my arm.

I told the artist that I absolutely would not accept Freedom ISN’T Free; I felt the contraction was lazy for the sacrifice I wanted to represent.  And, as you see, the words are circle around a folded Old Glory – the flag given to the kin of a fallen servicemember.  That, to me was PARAMOUNT.  That, I’d thought, was the sacrifice.  And no military service short of this could qualify as ‘a sacrifice.’

But, as I prepared to write this article, I metaphorically took a ‘from the clouds’ view of the Earth, to acknowledge that:

          As I write this post…

          As I publish this post…

As this post goes off into the internet wonderland…

          As you read this post…

As you think about this perspective…

“Freedom is not free” is being defended as the sentry at a gate – on military bases across the globe; as a first point of contact coming onboard a Navy ship moored to a pier; as the person monitoring changes on a boring radar screen in a crucial surveillance bunker.

There are thousands of servicemembers on watch, right now, ensuring that our freedom remains.  Those who have raised their hand and sworn an oath know this reality – that our freedom is not accomplished just by those revered souls resting in the ground, Missing in Action, etc.

There are women and men, right now, holding a rifle, and staying awake – all hours – night & day – to ensure the our fences around our military remain secure.  Those fence remain secure, so that our volunteer forces can ensure that WE remain secure.

          AND.  FREE.
